The Atlantic hurricane season’s next tropical storm could form later this week once a disturbance tracks near the Bahamas, but its potential impacts to the U.S. remain uncertain this far out in time.
Where is the disturbance now? The tropical wave that might eventually grow into a tropical depression or storm is located east of the Lesser Antilles near the “X” in the graphic below, according to the National Hurricane Center. It’s producing limited shower and thunderstorm activity at this time because of an abundance of dry air.
When and where could it develop? The National Hurricane Center says development, if it occurs, won’t happen until at least the second half of this week, generally in the shaded area on the map below. Most computer models suggest that development could occur by either Friday or Saturday somewhere near the Bahamas.

At a Glance
- A disturbance in the western Atlantic could organize into a tropical depression or storm.
- That could happen late this week or weekend near The Bahamas, Cuba or Hispaniola.
- Its potential impact to the U.S. East or Gulf Coasts remains uncertain, assuming it develops at all.
- Possible tracks range from a sharp recurve well into the Atlantic Ocean to the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
